After tying the game with two seconds left, the Canes lost in overtime for the first time this season.

The Carolina Hurricanes did everything but score more goals than their opponent on Thursday night as they lost to the New York Islanders, 5-4 in overtime at the PNC Arena.

It was the first overtime loss of the season for Carolina, who had won 10 straight games that went to extra time, previously.

The game was an exciting one and even though the home team outshot the visitors 43-16 (shots on goal), they came out on the short end where it counted, on the scoreboard.

The Canes also missed the net on shots 22 times and had 31 shots blocked for a total of 96 total shots attempted. On the other side, the Islanders attempted a total of 39 shots.

Even though the Canes were dominating with ice time in their enemy’s zone as well as with their shot generation, they played most of the third period from behind.

Carolina took the lead in the first when Jalen Chatfield knocked in his second of the season.

Bo Horvat tied the game when he tipped a pass by Mat Barzal over Pyotr Kochetkov. Horvat was wide open and the goalie did not have a chance on that one.

The Canes took the lead again when Jordan Staal also scored his second of the season just two minutes in.

The Islanders would then score a shorthanded goal and then another at even strength before the end of the period, a period where the Canes outshot them by a margin of 15-3.

That is not a misprint, the Islanders scored two times in that period with just three shots on goal.

Jack Drury was able to tie the score just 39 seconds into the third, but the Islanders took the lead again shortly thereafter.

Try as they might, the Hurricanes were unable to tie things up again until there were just 2.5 seconds left. Sebastian Aho knocked in the goal as he crashed the net hard with the attempt and the crowd went wild.

The Canes had performed very well in overtime up until this game but Barzal rifled in the game-winner for New York.

After the game, Seth Jarvis took responsibility for the loss because he said that he turned over the puck at a key time.

Brind’Amour said that he was very happy with the effort and team’s overall performance. He did admit that the goalie allowed a couple he wished he did not, but he did not blame the “grade A” chances allowed as an excuse for the goalie.

“There are grade A chances allowed every game, you need to have a save on them sometimes” he said.

Next up for the Hurricanes will be the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

Game Notes:

  • The Finns, Aho and Kotkaniemi had a rough night in the faceoff circle. They went 25% and 23% respectively. The team finished at 45%.
  • Kochetkov allowed five goals on just 16 shots. He now has a .878 save percentage. Raanta’s SV% is .854.
  • Give the Islanders credit for blocking 31 shots.
  • Brady Skjei played a team high 23:11.
