It’s time for another round of NHL Rumours with us here at Last Word on Hockey. The Philadelphia Flyers are in a position to sell at the trade deadline, and have several names that are being discussed in rumours. One is a young forward with term that has caught the eye of the Boston Bruins.
NHL Rumours: Flyers’ Forward Generating Interest from Bruins
Rumour: Anthony DiMarco of Daily Faceoff wrote on February 27 that Owen Tippett is a player the Boston Bruins have checked in on. The Flyers aren’t looking to move him, but are open to discussions.
My latest for @DailyFaceoff, the #nhlbruins having interest in several #stlblues players.
Also on how they have been keeping tabs on Ristolainen, Tippett and Weegar.https://t.co/dS1S8LrUBC

Analysis: Owen Tippett is part of a crowded picture on the wing for the Flyers. Tippett’s time on the wing is divided among the likes of Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov. Tyson Foerster is another young winger who was making a huge impact before a season-ending injury suffered in December. This season, Trevor Zegras has played more on the wing than at centre, leaving questions as to whether he’ll ever be used primarily down the middle.
The Flyers also have prospects like Porter Martone and Alex Bump waiting in the wings. That gives them an abundance of wingers. Eventually, someone is going to have to be moved out to help improve the centre and defence positions.
Tippett could certainly fall into that category, especially if it helps the Flyers make a significant upgrade at centre, where they are very limited on talent.
What It Means
As DiMarco’s report states, the Flyers aren’t looking to trade Tippett. General manager Daniel Briere signed Tippett to a significant contract extension in January 2024. The Flyers have stated that they like Tippett’s skill set, and it’s about getting him to find more consistency in his game.
Still, there is substance to this. It may not be in time for Friday’s trade deadline, but food for thought this offseason. The Flyers know Martone is coming soon. They have established Konecny, Michkov, and Foerster as part of the core. And as much as they have included Tippett in those conversations, somebody is going to have to be moved to add at the crucial positions where they are lacking.
The timing of this rumour is also significant because of Tippett’s contract. A modified no-trade clause kicks in this offseason. The Flyers have only this deadline to move Tippett without the need for his 10-team list.
The Bruins hold the final Wild Card position and are trending towards buying at the deadline to boost their push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Tippett may be among several players not moved at this year’s trade deadline. Many deals that don’t happen in March are completed later in the summer because the groundwork began months earlier. That could certainly happen.
The Flyers have stood by the philosophy that any move they make has short and long-term benefits. If Tippett can fetch a top-six centre or top-pairing defenceman that the Flyers have longed for, it may be too good to pass up for Philadelphia.
