The Carolina Hurricanes currently lead the Metropolitan Division with 66 points. In recent years, they have been in the conversation to win the Stanley Cup, but have not won the National Hockey League’s ultimate prize in two decades.
One player who has recently emerged as a possible trade candidate is Andrei Svechnikov of Barnaul, Russia. According to John Matisz of The Score, the Hurricanes may be shopping their first line left winger. The rationale is that both parties may just want a change of scenery.
Entire career with the Hurricanes
Svechnikov was the second overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The only player selected in front of him was Rasmus Dahlin, the veteran blueliner from Lidkoping, Sweden, who was picked first overall by the Buffalo Sabres. Svechnikov has spent the last eight seasons with the Hurricanes, and has been an instrumental part to their entire lineup. He has 404 points in 527 games.
Svechnikov in 2025-26
In 49 games this season, Svechnikov has 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points. He is a +1 with 32 penalty minutes, 13 power-play points, two game-winning goals, 137 shots on goal, nine faceoff wins, nine blocked shots, 83 hits, 16 takeaways, and 56 giveaways.
Svechnikov’s first game-winning goal came on November 21 in a 4-3 Hurricanes win over the Winnipeg Jets. Svechnikov scored at 3:19 of the third period from Nikolaj Ehlers of Aalborg, Denmark, and Sebastian Aho of Rauma, Finland to put the Hurricanes up 4-2 at the time.
Svechnikov’s second game-winning goal came on Saturday in a 4-21 Hurricanes win over the New Jersey Devils. In the same game, Svechikov recorded his sixth career hat trick. After scoring the only two goals of the first period, Svechnikov completed the scoring from Aho and Seth Jarvis of Winnipeg, Manitoba at 15:52 of the third period.
Denied rumor he requested a trade
Svechnikov did not have a single point after his first eight games. There were rumors from Elliotte Friedman of Rogers Sportsnet and published by Ryan Henkel of The Hockey News, that Svechnikov was open to being traded. Svechnikov was reportedly disappointed being demoted from the first to the fourth line, and seeing his minutes diminished. However, Svechnikov has publicly stated there are no truth to the rumors, and over the last 41 games, he has been averaging almost a point per game (40 points in 41 games). It is interesting if the recent rumors from Matisz have validity or if they will be shot down again by Svechnikov. In terms of his contract status, Svechnikov is set to make $7.75 million per year through to 2028-29.
