A quick look at some Hurricanes news

The Canes are off until Thursday night when they play San Jose. They have had two optional practices with minimal participation on Monday and Tuesday.

Since things are pretty quiet, I thought I would look for some related news.

First of all, “The Athletic” ran a feature ranking all the owners of the league. This compilation was different than the ranking listed earlier which was from the opinions of agents. Dundon did not fare well in that survey.

For this article, James Myrtle asked for the opinions of readers. Dundon finished at #10.

For those of you who have not gotten enough of the Mikko Rantanen drama, Pierre LeBrun has another write up from yesterday.

Newly acquired Mark Jankowski set an NHL record with his brilliant 4 for 4 shooting touch.

According to LeBrun, the Canes have not given up on Mitch Marner. There are some other interesting names mentioned here as well.

Adam Proteau gives his opinions about Carolina goaltending.

We knew going into the season that Carolina had the overall depth to be one of the NHL’s best squads. But like all teams, the Hurricanes aren’t perfect. And if they do get flushed out of the first or second round of this year’s playoffs due to their goaltending, no one can say they didn’t see it coming.

During all the hoopla on trade deadline day, we did not give proper recognition to some of the new players. Here are copies of the team’s news release for each player.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 7, 2025

‘CANES ACQUIRE MARK JANKOWSKI FROM NASHVILLE

Carolina trades fifth-round selection for former first-round pick

RALEIGH, NC – Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired forward Mark Jankowski from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft.

“Mark adds size and depth to our team down the middle,” said Tulsky. “His addition gives our coaches more lineup flexibility for the stretch run and the playoffs.”

Jankowski, 30, is in his ninth NHL season and has totaled nine points (4g, 5a) in 41 games for the Predators. The Hamilton, Ont, native was originally selected by the Calgary Flames in the first round, 21st overall, at the 2012 NHL Draft. Jankowski (6’4”, 212 lbs.) established career highs with Calgary in 2018-29, registering 14 goals and 18 assists (32 points). Prior to turning professional, he played four seasons with Providence College, winning an NCAA championship with the Friars in 2015.

‘CANES ACQUIRE STANKOVEN, PICKS FOR RANTANEN

Carolina receives first-round picks in ‘26 and ‘28, third-rounders in ‘26, ‘27

RALEIGH, NC – Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired center Logan Stankoven, first round picks in 2026 and 2028 and third-round selections in 2026 and 2027 from the Dallas Stars in exchange for forward Mikko Rantanen.

“Logan is young, skilled and tenacious,” said Tulsky. “He is well-equipped to play our style of hockey and should be an excellent fit with our group, and the draft capital acquired will help us continue to improve our team.”

Stankoven, 22, has scored nine goals and added 20 assists (29 points) in 59 games with the Stars this season. A second-round selection, 47th overall, at the 2021 NHL Draft, Stankoven has totaled 15 goals and 28 assists (43 points) in 83 career NHL games for Dallas, and added eight points (3g, 5a) in 19 Stanley Cup playoff appearances. The Kamloops, B.C., native played his first full professional season in 2023-24, winning the Dudley “Red” Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s rookie of the year after registering 24 goals and 33 assists (57 points) in 47 games played for the Texas Stars. He was recalled by Dallas to make his NHL debut in Raleigh against the Hurricanes on Feb. 24, 2024, and scored 14 points (6g, 8a) in 24 games down the stretch to help the Stars clinch the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

Prior to turning professional, Stankoven spent parts of five seasons with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, totaling 260 points (115g, 145a) in 179 career games and earning WHL and CHL Player of the Year honors in 2022 with 104 points (45g, 59a) in 59 games played. He also represented Canada at a number of international competitions, winning gold at the 2021 IIHF World U18 Championships and the 2022 and 2023.
