Analytics say that the Canes are playoff favorites

I was making my way through “X” (formerly known as The Twitter) and found this article concerning NHL playoff chances.

MoneyPuck.com, a respected resource of hockey analytics, has the Carolina Hurricanes as the favorites to win the Cup. It is by a fraction of a percentage point here, but it is what it is.

Following up on their spreadsheet, dated March 27th, 2025, odds are 13.2% that Carolina wins the Cup compared to Dallas at 11.6%.

They explain the basis behind the numbers on the next page and a large portion of the compilation is based upon goaltending, (29%). The team’s ability to generate scoring chances also is a major factor, (51%).

Unfortunately, analytics alone do not win Championships. It also takes grit, desire, heart and some luck. But one could argue that those attributes contribute to creating the analytic results in the first place. The stats don’t manufacture themselves in a vacuum.

According to FanDuel, the Panthers are the favorites. Dallas, Colorado, and Edmonton are also ahead of Carolina.

Anyway, I thought this might be an interesting discussion on a quiet off day.

For those of you interested in betting on hockey, there is some good information on that as well.
