The Ottawa Senators Have Big News for the Future of the Franchise

August 11, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Thrre is big news for the Ottawa Senators today, as the dream of a new downtown arena is looking no longer like it will be just a dream. The news being reported is the National Capital Commission (NCC) and the Ottawa Senators have an agreement in place. The agreement will be that the Sens franchise will purchase 11 acres of land in the LeBreton Flats area. This is huge news for the Sens, and all the organization and its fans. We may finally see hockey at a downtown venue, with this being a pivotal first step to that process.

Breaking News: The National Capital Commission and the #Sens have signed an agreement of purchase and sale for 11 acres at LeBreton Flats. Both parties will now proceed with next steps.

One Step Closer to a New Ottawa Senators Arena

The next steps in the process appear to be zoning and design approvals, as well as decontamination. However, the nice thing is that the process is moving to these next phases. The Sens president and chief executive officer Cyril Leeder said “there are still many more hurdles to clear.” So, there is still some work to be done. But the fact is, that it is no longer a question of if, but now when, Ottawa will get an arena in the downtown vicinity.

The report states that they will aim to create a major events centre. This includes a mixed-use development for the area where the new arena will eventually be built.

This news has been a long-time coming for the Sens. The late Sens owner, Eugene Melnyk, had visions of a downtown arena for sometime. Now, with owner Michael Andlauer in place, things seem to be moving smoothly, on and off the ice.

In fact, if we go back to early 2018, Melnyk and his business partner at the time, John Ruddy, actually had reached a deal in principle with the NCC. However, as it went along, Melnyk ended up pulling the plug on the deal. He wasn’t willing to finalize the deal unless Ruddy made good on other business dealings. That business relationship did not end well, as both sides ended up suing the other. However, for the Sens franchise, it prevented the purchase of the LeBreton Flats land at that time. Now, fast forward to current day, and we have a deal. The details haven’t been discussed, but a purchase of 11 acres in the area has been discussed.

This is great news for Ottawa and its fan base. They have something to look forward to, and this comes on the heels of making the playoffs for the first time in eight, long seasons. They have a great young base of players, and now the prospects of a beautiful downtown arena for them to play in.
