Today’s news had been expected based on the NHL rumour mill, but nonetheless it only now happened. The Montreal Canadiens announce that Alexandre Texier signs with the club. He signed a one-year deal with the club.
Alexandre Texier Wastes No Time and Signs with the Montreal Canadiens
Yesterday, we found out that the St. Louis Blues had put forward Alexandre Texier on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination. Then today, as 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time rolled around, he became an unrestricted free agent. Since anybody is able to ink him to a deal, whoever wanted him had to be quick on the draw.

Elliotte Friedman and Bruce Garrioch already had been spreading rumours of possible landing locations. It didn’t make sense in Ottawa, the recent talk was of Ottawa looking to hit a home run, Texier wasn’t it. The plan had been for him to meet with a couple teams, and go from there. But all that doesn’t matter now, as he has signed with the Habs.
Texier is originally a native of France. He had fallen out of rotation in St. Louis this year with just a single point in eight games. Furthermore, he’s had a solid career to this point. He brings his two-way game and a bit of depth skill to the lineup. Therefore, there’s no reason to expect that he can’t have a bounce back with his newest organization.
Texier’s career year, as a 24-year-old in 2023-24 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. That year he collected 12 goals and 18 assists in 78 games in an average of 15:11 ice time a game. However, since joining St. Louis for the 2024-25 campaign, he hasn’t played a lot. He only has 12 points in 39 games.
Alexandre Texier is officially an unrestricted free agent after clearing unconditional waivers. His contract has been terminated.

With all of Montreal’s recent injury troubles, this signing means a lot. They are currently without Kirby Dach, Alex Newhook, and Patrik Laine, that is a huge blow to your top six.
