CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After sweating through the offseason program and opening week of NFL training camp, the Carolina Panthers opened Tuesday’s two-hour practice in heavy, cool rain.
“What a gift,” Panthers coach Dave Canales said during a press conference. “I mean, just to get the experience of it, that could happen to us early in the season here, with just some of the storms that have been rolling through.
“So, I think the passing was a little sloppy. There were some, what would normally be like some obvious catches for guys that went through hands, on both sides, really some interceptions that we kind of missed opportunities.”
The visiting Cleveland Browns were warned of possible similar conditions for Wednesday’s joint practice. The teams open the exhibition season Friday night at Bank of America Stadium.
Canales contacted Browns coach Kevin Stefanski to discuss the field’s conditions and practice parameters.
“We’re just going to practice,” Canales said. “The field was great. So the turf itself, there wasn’t a lot of slipping, our grounds crew has done an amazing job, just making sure that it’s draining properly and all that.
“So, we’ll go out there, we’ll practice, and I think Kevin kind of expects that.”

Panthers coach Dave Canales Benches JJ Jansen’s QB Dreams
As the Panthers’ long snapper for the past 18 years, JJ Jansen established a franchise record for appearing in 260 games. He also continues to dabble in developing his skills at quarterback. Or at least he likes to think so.
During individual drills, Dalton often throws to defensive backs practicing pick-offs, among other fringe signal-calling duties.
When Andy Dalton joked around by attempting a few pre-practice long snaps last Wednesday, Jansen was later asked if he was concerned with the backup quarterback taking his job. He wasn’t.
“I’m going to take his,” Dalton quipped.
Not so fast, said Canales, a former all-league QB at Carson (Calif.) High.
The Panthers coach has watched Dalton throw since joining the organization in January 2024.
So, is there a scenario in which Canales would consider inserting Jansen at quarterback for a preseason series or snap?
Without missing a beat, Canales said: “Absolutely not.”
Who would like to see it happen?
