The Los Angeles Rams’ secondary made life challenging for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, picking him off three times in the 20-17 overtime win by the visitors on Jan. 18 at Soldier Field.
Los Angeles looked on track to face the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title in regulation after putting together their best offensive drive since the opening possession to start the fourth quarter.
The drive ended with a five-yard touchdown run by Kyren Williams, his second of the game, giving the Rams a 17-10 lead. However, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams threw a jaw-dropping 14-yard touchdown pass to Cole Kmet to tie the game at 17 late in the fourth quarter, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, Williams had a costly interception, his third of the game, which returned the ball to the Rams and set up Harrison Mevis’ game-winning field goal. After a three-interception performance, former NFL player Emmanuel Acho didn’t hold back his criticism of the Chicago star.
“It’s not just when Caleb threw the picks, it’s not just where Caleb threw the picks, it’s not just that Caleb threw the picks, it’s all of the above,” Acho said on the Jan. 18 edition of “Speakeasy.” “That pick that he threw with the game on the line in overtime, if the Bears get any points, they win that ball game.
“Could have been a field goal, could have been a touchdown. So just don’t turn the ball over, Caleb, and you likely win that game. At the beginning of the game, Caleb, you’re in the red zone. That turnover cost you points. So Caleb gives, and Caleb Williams takes away.”
Matthew Stafford Sends Strong Message to Rams Defense
Rams QB Matthew Stafford gave praise to the defense for securing turnovers against the Bears’ offense, especially on the final interception made by Williams.
“That’s what it takes to win in the playoffs,“ Stafford told reporters. “Sometimes offense is going to go out and have a great day and find a way to win it. Sometimes defense is going to go out there and have a day like they did today and keep us in it for as long as they did, and then make the play at the end to get us the ball back.
“It’s a team effort. We got a resilient group. Love being a part of it. Obviously, things we can do better, but we found a way to win the football game in January and February. That’s what matters.”
Ben Johnson Doesn’t Hold Back After Bears Loss to Rams
Despite being on the losing end, Bears head coach Ben Johnson credited the Rams for making more plays than his side, which led to their disappointing result as Los Angeles now heads to the NFC title game.
“Our guys fought the entire way, just like they have all season long,“ Johnson said postgame (h/t FOX Sports). “I thought this was very much like our team has been. You’ve got to give the Rams credit. Coach [Sean] McVay does a phenomenal job. Coach [Chris] Shula did a great job with their defense this week, and they ended up making a couple more plays than we did.
“And that’s why they ended up going into overtime, and they ended up coming out on top. And so, like I said, disappointing result. Our guys are feeling it right now. They all believe, man. They all believed all year long that we could find a way to win each and every week. It’s disappointing like that.”
