s the Los Angeles Chargers continue to prepare for the 2025 NFL season, they are getting one of their most important players back just in the nick of time. On August 4, linebacker Denzel Perryman was released from jail, with the charges against him being dropped. Arrest on Friday for possession of a weapon, Perryman dodges a bullet and will rejoin the Chargers ahead of their second preseason game on August 10.
Perryman was pulled over because of a vehicle violation on Friday night and after cops searched his vehicle, five firearms were discovered– including two assault rifles. Police then arrested him, holding him without bail through the weekend. Originally scheduled for a court appearance on August 5, LA’s district attorney decided not to file criminal charges against him.
Perryman’s Release and the Chargers’ Response
Released around 1 p.m. on August 4, Perryman returned to the Chargers’ facility in the evening, with a video posted on an Instagram story of him back in the building. Chargers head coach, Jim Harbaugh, visited Perryman in jail on Sunday and voiced his support for his star player. Throughout the whole process, Perryman reportedly stayed in good spirits.
“He was in good spirits,” Harbaugh said. “I love Denzel. He’s always done right. He’s never been in trouble. Got a beautiful family, and we’re just letting the due process play out.”
The Chargers did not release a statement after Perryman’s arrest but his agent, Ron Butler, put out a statement regarding the situation.
“We are aware of the recent reports regarding Denzel Perryman’s arrest in Los Angeles,” Butler said via X/Twitter. “At this time, we are still gathering facts and will fully cooperate with the process. Denzel is a respected veteran in the NFL and a dedicated father, teammate, and professional. While we do not take this situation lightly, we remain confident that the matter will be resolved fairly and in accordance with the law. Out of respect for the process and all parties involved, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Perryman’s Career at a Glance
A second round pick by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft, Perryman is entering the second season of his second stint with the franchise. Drafted out of Miami, Perryman spent the first six seasons of his career with the Chargers franchise before joining the Carolina Panthers on a two-year deal in the 2021 offseason. But after the preseason, Perryman was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders where he spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021– recording a career high of 154 combined tackles (102 solo) in 15 games played and started.
After two seasons with the Raiders, Perryman signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, appearing in 12 games and missing two due to a suspension. In his lone season with the Texans, he recorded 76 combined tackles, 45 solo tackles, 0.5 sacks and six tackles for loss. Following the 2023 campaign, Perryman returned to the Chargers on a one-year deal and after a good showing in 2024, he resigned to another one-year deal for 2025.
