The Miami Dolphins have entered a new era after the hiring of head coach Jeff Hafley and GM Jon-Eric Sullivan this offseason. With the organization expected to move on from veteran quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, it is in search of a new starting quarterback.
After successfully stepping in for the injured Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers veteran quarterback Mac Jones has reportedly garnered interest from several quarterback-needy teams this offseason. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Jones has the “respect” of the Dolphins, and a trade could be a possibility.

Part of the reason why teams like the Dolphins may be interested in a trade for Jones is because of how the former national champion performed in 2025. He won five of his eight starts, tossing 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Jones also finished second among all NFL quarterbacks last season in completion percentage (69.6%).
Despite being traded away from the New England Patriots after his first stint as an NFL starter ended poorly, perhaps he could soon earn another opportunity. After posting a top-10 quarterback rating of 62.3, it is clear that the former Alabama product hasn’t rolled over on his NFL career.
With one year still left on his current contract, a trade would be the most logical way for the Dolphins or any other team to acquire his services. Of course, Miami being in the AFC East certainly couldn’t hurt the chances of a potential trade. Time will tell if any type of offer will be placed on the table, seeing as free agency is on the horizon.
A Departure for Mac Jones Could Hurt the 49ers
GettyMac Jones is still under contract with the 49ers for one more season.
As he proved this past season, Jones is one of the top backup quarterbacks in the NFL. Without his performances in the wake of Purdy going down due to injury, the Niners likely don’t win 12 games. In fact, they may not have been in contention to make the playoffs. That is how important his play was to the team. So, losing him to another team could hurt in that respect.
Along those same lines, as good as Purdy has been as the team’s starter dating back to the 2022 season, he has developed a trend of getting injured. The former Iowa State star has not yet played a full season and has played more than nine games in the regular season just twice in four seasons. Losing a steady backup quarterback such as Jones could be a tough pill to swallow for head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch.
However, this would not be the first time that Shanahan and Lynch have lost a steady backup. Before leading the Seattle Seahawks to a victory in the Super Bowl this season, Sam Darnold held down the fort back in 2023. Even players such as Trey Lance, C.J. Beathard, and Nick Mullens have found ways to win games as backups in the Bay Area. If the organization were to lose Jones, they’d likely have a plan in place to replace him.
