Skyler Brind’Amour Signs New Deal

Brind’Amour made his NHL debut April 16th of last season. It was a special moment for the Brind’Amour family, as they got to see Skyler debut with his father, Rod Brind’Amour, behind the bench as the Hurricanes head coach. Skyler is just the eighth player in NHL history to play a game in the NHL with his father as head coach.

The next night, the pride the Brind’Amour family grew even more as Skyler scored his first NHL goal.

With the Hurricanes spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs already secured, the stars were aligned for the Brind’Amour family to have these special moments.

RFA Status

Brind’Amour was not drafted by the Hurricanes, but he was a free agent when he signed with them prior to last season. Despite switching teams in free agency, Brind’Amour still retains restricted free agent status. As a result, the Hurricanes maintained his rights, but had to offer him a contract to avoid the risk of an offer sheet.

Brind’Amour and the Hurricanes

Brind’Amour’s role is not clear at this time. What his role is may depend on a few things. For starters, the remainder of the off-season needs to be looked at to see what other moves the Canes make. Furthermore, a strong training camp and preseason will help Brind’Amour get on the Hurricanes radar if he is not already.

It does feel safe to say that Brind’Amour will get more NHL time this season. If he can take advantage of the opportunities, he may became a mainstay in the team’s lineup.

Like Father, Like Son?

Rod helped the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup in 2006. 20 years later, could Skyler follow in his father’s footsteps and help bring the Stanley Cup back to Carolina?
