Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was one of the best at his position in NFL history, and was appropriately recognized as a First Ballot Hall of Famer.
While his split from the Lions wasn’t on the most amicable of terms, the good news is that fences have been mended in recent years.
Johnson recently admitted to somewhat of a secret weapon of his that has drawn a varied reaction from his fans.

While making an appearance on the podcast of current Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Johnson admitted that he would smoke weed sometimes before games in order to help him deal with the pain caused by the physical realities of playing at an elite level in the National Football League.
“There’s points in times … I’d be on the way to that stadium, I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know how I’m gonna make it today.’ I probably did it a handful of times throughout my career,” Johnson said earlier in the week. “The funny thing is more times than not, I had a good game, too. I never had a bad game.”
He didn’t specify before which games that he would smoke, but said that he doesn’t believe that it negatively impacted his performance.
“The funny thing is, more times than not, I had a good game, too,” he said.
In addition to his former gig as a top NFL wideout, Johnson is also the founder of the cannabis research company, Primitiv.

Calvin Johnson Is The Top Wide Receiver In Lions History
Johnson set numerous records for the Lions during his playing career, while also setting the new NFL record for most receiving yards in a season (1,964) along with the most consecutive 100-yard receiving games (six).
However, not long after his retirement at the age of 30, the relationship between the two sides took a sour turn when the Lions asked Johnson to pay back $1.6 million of his signing bonus for not fulfilling his full contract.
Fences have been mended in recent years, and Johnson has been seen numerous times at Ford Field supporting the Lions. In 2023, team president Rod Wood credited the work done by Lions chief operating officer Mike Disner for helping bridge the gap between the two sides.
“It’s been a pleasure to get to know Calvin throughout the process,” Disner said at the time. “He’s an impressive, impressive guy. One of the best receivers in the history of the NFL, and on top of that, I mean, he cares deeply about his family, the community, football and the city of Detroit. Him and Barry choosing to live here after they’re done is part of what makes them so special. Just getting to know Calvin throughout the process, having that open dialogue and just getting to know him as a person, kind of what he’s interested in, a lot of that aligns with what we’re interested in as an organization, you know, helping the city grow the game.”
Johnson has since been named to the Detroit Lions All-Time Team as well as being inducted into the Lions’ Ring of Honor.
