Former Panthers player named new HC of local HS football program

January 25, 2025 by Panthers Wire

The Captain is now the Coach.

Former Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has officially been named the new head football coach at Julius L. Chambers High School, home of one of North Carolina’s top programs. The now-36-year-old was welcomed to the Cougars with a ceremony on Friday.

“I came here to win now and win early, point blank, period,” he said during his press conference. “So we’re going to start by doing that. I can’t wait. I’m excited and just to see some of you guys and to start to work with y’all. And let’s be the standard. Let’s go.”

A Mobile, Ala. native, Munnerlyn attended the University of South Carolina from 2006 to 2008. The Panthers would then select the 5-foot-9, 195-pound defensive back in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft.

Munnerlyn went on to play seven of his 10 pro campaigns with the Panthers. He totaled 357 combined tackles, 10.0 sacks, six forced fumbles and an all-time franchise record of five interception return touchdowns.
