The Flyers hand Carolina their first home loss, 3-1.

“Inconsistency” was a common term post game to describe the Carolina Hurricanes after their 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night at the PNC Arena.

The Flyers scored early in the first period as well as late in the period to set the tone for the night.

They added another goal just 29 seconds into the second period to make the score 3-0.

Later in the period, Stefan Noesen took a nice pass from Tony DeAngelo and roofed a shot over Carter Hart, who made 31 saves on 32 shots for Philadelphia.

That would end the scoring in this one.

After the game, the interviews were filled with quotes which were hauntingly familiar to the quotes after the snooze-fest against the Florida Panthers on last Friday night.

Jordan Staal –

“As a group, it doesn’t look like we’ve completely bought into how we want to do things.”

Rod Brind’Amour –

“It’s frustrating, but it’s got to stop. That’s going to be on me pretty soon to start shaking things up if we continue to do that. We’re too good to be inconsistent.”

The Canes did out-shoot the Flyers 32-24 but many of their shots were harmless. The visitors did a great job of hustling to block 33 shots as well. The Canes blocked nine shots for the night.

This team is supposedly too good to be playing (about) .500 hockey. They will look to right the ship against the Penguins on Saturday night.

Game Notes:

  • Noesen, who scored the only Carolina goal also led the team with three hits.
  • The team had a rough night in the circle and won 46%.
  • The defensive pairing of 7 and 77 has not worked all season and should be broken up in some way. They were broken up for a bit so it is surprising to see them back together again.
  • The Hurricanes have a tendency to play poorly in front of a national television audience. They played to expectations in that regard.
  • At one point in the TNT broadcast, they used a Jordan Martinook shot as an example of “what not to do”. Martinook was open in front of Carter Hart but failed to lift the puck and knocked his shot into the goalie’s pads. It was brought up that if Martinook had tilted the angle of his stick blade slightly, he could have lifted the puck over the pads for a goal. Jordan’s blade was flat on the ice.
