Josh Norman is a Carolina Panther Once Again

January 1, 2023 by Prime Time Sports Talk

A familiar face rejoined the Panthers organization on Monday Josh Norman, who was a crucial part of Carolina’s 2015 Super Bowl run. Norman is familiar with Wilks, who was a defensive backs coach in 2015. Here are questions from the news about the signing of Norman.

What Led to Norman’s Signing?

After the win against the Detroit Lions, it was announced that Jaycee Horn suffered a wrist injury during the fourth quarter, which would require surgery. Thankfully Horn’s surgery for his broken wrist went smoothly. There is a possibility he could return against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. Horn would’ve likely covered Mike Evans. It will be interesting to see who is tasked with covering Evans.

Why Did the Panthers Sign Norman?

Carolina signed Norman for three reasons. Reason One Jaycee is out for the Panthers’ match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reason two, our secondary room is thin, and Carolina relies on C.J. Henderson and Keith Taylor. Taylor was exposed by Diontae Johnson back in Week 15. Finally, they signed Josh to add veteran leadership to a very young cornerback room.

Norman’s veteran leadership is significant, especially to a young secondary with an average age of just 24 years old. In his first 24 hours, Norman has already set a great example, asking questions during meetings, and helping the younger guys with technique. According to defensive coordinator Al Holcomb.

Will He Make the 53-man Roster?

It has been announced that Norman will be elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of Carolina’s upcoming match-up against Tampa Bay; he will be wearing number six. The last Panther to wear number six was Baker Mayfield.

How Many Snaps Will Norman Get?

Holcomb said when speaking to the media on Thursday, “We will see how he progresses in terms of how he feels physically, Coach (Wilks) was right when he said there’s a difference between in shape and in-game shape….he would probably be on a limited role”. The Panthers will probably look at Henderson and Taylor to play a majority of snaps and throw Norman in situational moments.

Final Thoughts

Signing Norman is a great move by the Panthers; he doesn’t have to be 2015 prime. However, he does provide that experience. Even if this signing doesn’t work out, the Panthers lost virtually nothing because he was a free agent on a one-year deal.
