You could be forgiven if you thought Jalen Brunson was the only player scoring for the New York Knicks over their middling 2-3 start to the 2025-26 NBA season.
Yet, the Knicks finally appears to be getting going under first-year coach Mike Brown.
The Knicks are finally scoring since they have put up huge point totals in their past three games, where they have gone 2-1 and climbed back above .500.
Brunson, the Knicks captain, is eighth in the NBA in points per game (29.0), but New York was in the bottom-third of the NBA during its three-game losing skid — while Brown has adjusted to managing the Knicks bench.
The Knicks Offense Is Getting Uncorked
Though coach Tom Thibodeau was known as a defensive-minded coach, the Knicks offense last season was one of the NBA’s best — a major reason why they went to the Eastern Conference Finals.
So the fact the Knicks, who won 51 games a season ago, started the year this slowly on offense had to be alarming to fans and Brown, even though it is extremely early in the year.
But the Knicks have turned it around over their past 10 quarters. It started with their 72-point second half in their 135-125 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Friday night and carried over into the first three quarters of their rematch at home against Chicago, where they shot 64 percent from 3-point range in their 12-point win Sunday night.
“We haven’t really changed that much when it comes to the offense,” Brunson said. “We’ve been running a lot in practice and emphasizing getting to the corners and getting space for each other. I think everyone just had to ease into it and now just catching a rhythm.”
It continued Monday against the Washington Wizards, where the Knicks scored 76 points in the second and third quarters — and shot 50 percent in the second half — in their 119-102 win Monday.
The Knicks’ budding depth has been the marquee factor to their reversal on offense. They put up 46 points against the Bulls on Sunday then scored 33 points against Washington — after averaging 18 bench points per game over their three-game losing streak.
“We’ll just continue to learn,” forward Karl-Anthony Towns said. “It’s a slow process, but we’re taking steps forward. We’ve just got to keep building.”
Mike Brown Has ‘Made Mistakes’ With The Knicks’ Rotation
Knicks fans expected Brown, who is renowned for his prowess at managing lineups, to take the star-laden lineup and run with it. Yet, he admitted he has struggled to get the roster and offense figured out — and may only be getting acclimated over the past week.
“I didn’t help them a ton,” Brown said. “I was all over the map with substitutions, so it was hard for those guys to get a rhythm … so I have to do a better job than I thought of trying to have a rotation and sticking with it while still playing nine, nine-and-a-half [or] 10 guys.”
Knicks fans would gladly trade success in November for a championship, and Brown has seen how the Knicks offense is making progress at this early point.
“This is going to be a process,” Brown said. “We’re still not where we need to be offensively, but guys are starting to understand how to space the floor. They’re starting to understand how to respace. They’re understanding quick decisions, and when you have a really good understanding of those things you can almost make a blind pass based on our spacing and our spots.”
