David Tepper has been under scrutiny since he first purchased the Carolina Panthers. People were critical of having such a prideful billionaire owner. Many didn’t believe in his decision to hire Matt Rhule or the generous contract he received. The pressure to fire Matt Rhule built up until it finally exploded after the 49ers game last season. It was one of the darkest days in Carolina’s recent history because a sea of red and gold filled our beloved Bank of America Stadium. It’s not unheard of for fans of old teams with a successful history, like the 49ers or the Steelers, to fill the stands, but the cloud of failure brought on by Rhule and coming to a head that day added insult to injury.
It wasn’t just the failure of Rhule’s tenure that has bothered fans. Continuously rising ticket and concession prices only soured Tepper’s reign in Carolina more. Let’s just say an annual underwhelming appreciation box has done little to cleanse the pallet of the most loyal of fans, PSL owners. Perhaps David Tepper’s most scrutinized decision was backing out of the massive practice facility in Rock Hill. Many felt the billionaire could have helped Rock Hill with the $250 million debt, especially considering the project had already broken ground. Billionaires are people too, and we all have flaws and make mistakes. Unfortunately for Mr. Tepper, he’s a celebrity now, and the media and fans will question every decision he makes.
Another celebrity in the making is Tepper’s wife, Nicole Tepper. Until this off-season, she hasn’t received much attention from Panthers fans, and what little she had wasn’t negative. At worst, her importance to the organization has been dismissed or reduced by some to an attractive trophy wife. However, it’s becoming clear that she is much more to this organization and Charlotte. Nicole Tepper has been actively involved in charity and is becoming a face of compassion and exemplary of the social outreach every NFL organization hopes to portray. Her charm and generosity have counterbalanced her aggressive billionaire husband, who had begun to rub many fans the wrong way.
Throughout this offseason, Mrs. Tepper has shown her role and importance to the organization goes beyond the role of social outreach or her husband’s handler. She was part of the hiring committee that landed Frank Reich, and she has been front and center as Carolina has been scouting their next quarterback. Some scratched their heads at the notion of the owner’s wife helping in a football hire. This line of thinking is more than dated in this case, however. She’s been an asset in Carolina’s decision-making this offseason. Without intimate knowledge of the hiring process or how much input she has given into who will be the next quarterback, she’s brought a fresh perspective and aided Tepper in making vital personnel decisions. Some may call it women’s intuition, but she had a good eye for talent. Moreover, she seems to understand people, which is part of the equation for successful football organizations.
Why is there such a stark difference between the in-depth dive of Frank Reich compared to the knee-jerk hiring of Matt Rhule? Many attributed the decision to Tepper’s growth as an owner, noting he had learned from his previous mistakes. However, few have pointed out that Mrs. Tepper was a big part of this search. Buck Fitty (General Manager Scott Fitter) even credited Mrs. Tepper for her role in the coaching search. What struck me most about the comment is how it didn’t sound forced. It was authentic. He didn’t seem to be just sucking up to the owners, but he appeared to mean it. Was Mrs. Tepper the difference in the hiring process that the Panthers needed? At the very least, her insight lent to assembling the most accomplished coaching staff in team history.
Mrs. Tepper also has been noticeably present as Carolina has scouted their next rookie quarterback. She has been present for most of the quarterbacks’ pro days, and there are tons of photos showing her meeting the prospects and their families. One can only assume she has also been involved in the one-on-one interviews with these quarterback prospects.
As of now, all signs point towards the Panthers selecting Bryce Young #1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. I’ve even documented Mrs. Teppers meeting Bryce Young and how strongly encouraging the interaction was. During a “C3 Friday Night Free-for-All,” I’ve also stated how Mrs. Tepper’s involvement has seemingly diverted the river of failure for the Panthers. I genuinely believe Nicole Tepper has played a more prominent role in this epic off-season than any of us will ever know. Her compassion and interpretation of Keep Pounding will lift the Panthers in these upcoming seasons.
Every married man knows the old saying, “Happy Wife, Happy Life.” Fortunately, for Panthers fans and loyal C3 members, it’s now “Happy Wife, Happy Tailgating!” I hope Nicole gets all the credit she deserves for her contributions. I also hope those contributions lead to nothing but success for the Carolina Panthers.
