The high school football season in Charlotte kicked with a bang over the weekend as some of the best young football talent in the area took to the field for Week 1 of the 2025 season.
It started right here on Sports Radio WFNZ with the Keep Pounding Classic, as the Hough Huskies took down the South Pointe Stallions 14-10 in the opener while West Charlotte fell to Grimsley 28-27 in the second half of the double header in controversial fashion. The next night, the scene shifted to American Legion Memorial Stadium, where another double-header commenced. In the first game of the night, Myers Park dominated Jay M. Robinson 37-6 before Butler would use a big second half to pull away from the Olympic Trojans 32-14 in legendary head coach Brian Hales’ return to the sideline.
Earlier this afternoon, Nate Wimberly, host of ‘Football Friday Night’ for WBTV here in Charlotte, joined the Wes & Walker Show and discussed the incredible opening weekend of action, Hough’s bold statement after the win over South Pointe and why the state decided to go with the new classifications for this season.
Catch Nate and the WBTV crew on Football Friday Night every Friday of the high school football season and catch him daily on WBTV talking all things Charlotte sports.
