The Carolina Panthers will have to do it the hard way to get to the NFL playoffs.
With an opportunity to clinch their first NFC South title since 2015 with a win over the New Orleans Saints at Caesars Superdome on Sunday and Dec. 21, against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Panthers dropped a 20-17 decision.
If the Panthers had a way to beat a last-place club, they could have taken an easier route.
Now, the Panthers (7-7) will face the co-division-leading Buccaneers twice over the next three weeks with the divisional title on the line. Tampa Bay comes to Charlotte, N.C., next weekend and plays host for the Week 18 regular-season finale.
Panthers coach Dave Canales lamented the missed opportunities and lack of execution. They scored only 10 points after an efficient touchdown drive on their opening possession and yielded at least four third-down plays and at least 13 plays. They also committed a plethora of penalties.
“We have to move on quick,” Canales said during his post-game press conference, via Panthers.com. “Penalties killed us.”
So did Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, who beat the Panthers for the second time this season.
