Carolina Panthers coach Dave Canales often preaches, “next man up,” when an opening develops in the starting lineup.
In his second season as an NFL coach, Canales utilized most of the 53-man roster in Sunday’s 13-6 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
The rebuilding franchise is beginning to display depth it has not had in several seasons.
The Panthers (4-3) employed their sixth offensive line in seven outings, debuted a rotating running back system and turned to backup quarterback Andy Dalton to earn the save as Bryce Young, who hurt his ankle in the third quarter, earned his second road win of his three-year career.
Winners of three straight, the Panthers have not been over .500 this late in the season since Week 11 of 2019.
“We have a next man in mentality,” Panthers offensive lineman Taylor Moton said, as reported by Panthers.com. “Just the whole staff getting whoever’s up ready to roll and, ultimately, I’m loving all the guys I’m playing next to and have the utmost confidence in anyone who steps in.”
On the defensive side, cornerback Jaycee Horn intercepted two second-half passes and the Panthers generated six sacks after entering Week 7 with five combined.
“It’s just a testament to guys really committing to stopping the run so we can get after the quarterback,” said rookie outside linebacker Nic Scourton, who collected the first 1.5 sacks of his career.
After allowing an all-time high 534 points last season, the defense yielded just 220 yards Sunday.
“Just us staying together as a defense,” Horn said.

The Panthers’ backfield was a big storyline entering Sunday. Who would start, Chuba Hubbard or Rico Dowdle? Who would get the bulk carries? Hubbard was activated after missing the past two weeks with a calf injury, while Dowdle compiled a team-record 473 scrimmage yards the previous two outings. Dowdle, who had 14 plays of 10 yards or more when Hubbard was hurt, finished with 79 yards on 17 carries versus the Jets. Hubbard gained 31 yards on 14 attempts. Coach Dave Canales said of the rotation: “It felt great for me to know whoever I was calling the run for, I expect great execution out of these guys” …
