Wide receivers have won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award for the past two years (Garrett Wilson/Jamarr Chase). Before that wideout run, the award was mainly dominated by running backs and the occasional quarterback. The last QB to win the award was Justin Herbert in 2020. Over the past decade, four running backs, three wide receivers, and three quarterbacks have won OROY. With a notably weak rookie class of wideouts, the odds are on Bijan Robinson and Bryce Young to be rookie of the year.
The current odds-on favorite at +250, Bijan Robinson, enters a run-heavy offense that affords him ample opportunity to acquire the stats needed to take home the awards. Robinson is a dynamic and explosive back who has been deemed one of the best running back prospects to come into the league in years. He’s so good that the Falcons, who had a 1000-yard rusher in Tyler Allgeier last season, took Robinson with a Top-10 pick. Robinson has already become the team’s starting running back and is primed to be a centerpiece in the offense.
Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has the next-best odds at +500. Young takes the reigns of a team with new head coach and former NFL quarterback Frank Riech. Under Reich’s leadership, the team has taken on an offensive identity, and given the way the preseason play-calling went, this team wants the ball in Young’s hands. Although some question the talent that surrounds Young, he’s demonstrated the intellectual capability needed for a quarterback to find early success in the league. Young’s understanding of the game makes him a prime candidate to return the award to the quarterback position. Interestingly, the last time the Panthers had the #1 overall pick in the draft, they selected Cam Newton, who would go on to become OROY.
