CHARLOTTE (CAROLINA SPORTS LIVE) — By Tuesday at 4 p.m., every NFL team will have to have no more than 53 players on their active roster.
However, that does not mean that roster is what they will take into Week 1. Teams will then be able to claim or sign players who were waived or released by the other 31 teams. With injuries and contract decisions, rosters are very fluid throughout the season.
On Monday, the Panthers cut 18 players, including two quarterbacks and a kicker.
Coming into Tuesday, Carolina needed to make 19 more moves to get down to the 53-man limit. So far, those moves have included releasing nose tackle Shy Tuttle and safety Trevian Thomas, and waiving cornerback Mike Reid and running back Raheem Blackshear.
Tuttle was with the Panthers for two seasons and started all 32 games he played in for Carolina. Tuttle was a strong interior presence for the defense alongside Derrick Brown; however, he only recorded half a sack and one tackle for loss.
Just because someone is cut by the Panthers doesn’t mean they won’t be back. On Wednesday, teams can start putting together their practice squads with up to 17 players.
