The Carolina Panthers may not have a selection on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL draft—at least not at the moment. But do they have a pretty interesting piece of capital that kicks off Day 2.
President of football operations/general manager Dan Morgan spoke to reporters one week ahead of the annual announcing of names. And with his team sitting on the 33rd overall pick, a selection that will likely garner some outside interest, he was asked about a potential trade to start off the second round.
“I think sitting at 33, obviously, you have 32 teams ahead of you,” Morgan replied. “So, we really gotta see how it plays out. I’m not gonna box myself in to any, like, ‘Hey, we’re not gonna do this, we’re not gonna do that.’ Ideally though, if we’re sitting there and there’s a really good player, we’ll take him. Trading up—those are discussions that we still have to have. So I think everything is on the table right now. I don’t wanna box us in right now.”
Given last offseason’s franchise-altering leap to the No. 1 overall pick and the resources it took to get it done, another trade-up in the first round seems rather unlikely. Plus, their quest to reconstruct the roster in the shared image of Morgan and head coach Dave Canales would benefit from having as many selections as possible.
That, obviously, makes a trade-down much more likely—especially in a particularly deep class.
Along with that 33rd, the Panthers are also in possession of No. 39, No. 65, No. 101, No. 141, No. 142 and No. 240.
