The Carolina Panthers have locked down their backup behind Bryce Young.
The Carolina Panthers have re-signed Andy Dalton to a two year deal. The team has officially announced the deal, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the details.
Panthers and Andy Dalton reached agreement on a two-year, $8 million deal that includes $6 million guaranteed and has a max value of $10 million, per source. The contract is right at the going rate for established backup quarterbacks. Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor, and Davis Mills are all in the same salary bracket as Dalton.
It’s a very fair deal and was always the right move. Young and Dalton seem to have a very good relationship, and Dalton has the experience, wisdom, and demeanor to help Young develop into a potential franchise quarterback. Those will hopefully be his primary duties, but the Red Rifle showed he can still sling it a little bit in spot duty last season. He’s not a guy you want to count on for extended stretches, but he can come in and do a better job than most other backups around the league.
Dalton was going to be a free agent in March, so the team got out ahead of that by inking this contract now.
