The Panthers are moving on from veteran Jadeveon Clowney after just one season in Carolina.
On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Panthers are releasing veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney after just one season with the team. During the 2024 season, the then-31-year old recorded a team-high 5.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss to go with 46 tackles and four pass breakups.
Clowney was due $8.525 million in salary for 2025 with $2 million guaranteed. After failing to find a trade partner around this years draft, Carolina is deciding to cut the veteran loose.
Clowney was due $8.525M in salary, $2M of which is guaranteed. Panthers explored a potential trade on draft week, as @DNewtonespn previously mentioned, and went heavy on pass rushers on Day 2 of draft.

Without Clowney, the Panthers have a fairly young and inexperienced pass rush group that’s currently headlined by D.J. Wonnum and Patrick Jones II. Now, no member of the group is currently over the age of 27. Defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson — entering his age-31 season — will be the team’s returning sack leader as he also had 5.5 during the 2024 campaign.
The Panthers were expected to get younger at EDGE in this year’s draft but ultimately took wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with their first-round pick. However, with their next two picks, they landed both Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielan, two of the best pass rushers in the draft.
Carolina will now go forward with a young group that they hope — for their sake — is able to grow fast together in pursuit of turning the team’s fortunes around.
