According to veteran Panthers insider Scott Fowler, the Carolina organization is “unlikely” to make a trade for Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo ahead of the 2022 NFL season.
Instead, the team is increasingly likely to select a young quarterback option in this year’s draft.
To any Panther fan pining for Baker Mayfield or Jimmy G: sources tell me that dealing for either is unlikely.
Far more likely: adding to QB room via draft. Meanwhile, here’s my column on how grateful Carolina should be about last night’s Ickey shuffle: https://t.co/Fej03VIT63— Scott Fowler (@scott_fowler) April 29, 2022
The Panthers selected highly-touted offensive tackle prospect Ikem Ekwonu with their No. 6 overall pick last night. The Carolina organization does not currently have a second-round pick, but Fowler believes there’s “absolutely a chance” the team trades up to go after a guy like Malik Willis.
The Panthers could also grab a guy like Sam Howell in the later rounds.
“They like Malik Willis and actually considered him at 6. I think Sam Howell also a possibility. And a couple others, who would be more Day 3-type picks,” Fowler added.
The NFL world took to Twitter to react to this news.
“It would cost a lot more than what you’d send to the Browns for Baker to move up and choose Willis, Corral, or Ridder, but I have a feeling that the Panthers will do it. We may finally get our answer to the long-standing question mark at quarterback tonight…” one fan wrote.
“If this is true, we should focus on how to get Malik, Ridder, Corral, or Howell. Honesty, I’m fine with any of these QBs. All have different strengths. All can be upgrades to Sam Darnold with time. It’s all about what they’re willing to give up to get who they prefer,” another added.

The Panthers are currently rocking with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback heading into the 2022 season.
Should the franchise be aggressive and pursue a guy like Willis, or hang back and wait for a later-round QB pick?
