Now that a wild and crazy first round is over, where does the big board stand?
Despite other teams’ interest in trading up and the expectation of taking a defensive player, the Carolina Panthers zigged and took Arizona Wildcats WR Tetairoa McMillan with the 8th overall selection. There were plenty of other surprises as the first round continued, so who’s still available for the Panthers on Day 2?
Edge Defenders
The position everyone thought the Panthers would go for in round one still has plenty of good players available. Donovan Ezeiruaku and Mike Green both got first round consideration. Bradyn Swinson, Princely Umanmielen, and Nic Scourton are available as well and more likely to fall to 57, where the Panthers next pick sits. As we move toward the back half of day two, players like Oluwafemi Oladejo, Josiah Stewart, and Ashton Gillotte could be under consideration for the Panthers.
Defensive Backs
I expect the Panthers to bolster their defense one way or another in rounds two and/or three. Just like at edge, there are plenty of impact players on the backend still waiting to hear their names called.
Corners like Will Johnson and Shevon Revel were mocked in the first round quite often leading up to the draft. Other corners like Trey Amos and Benjamin Morrison could be second round targets. In the third round, players like Dorien Porter and Azareye’h Thomas could be on the radar.
Safety also has good players available, with Nick Emmanwori, Andrew Mukuba, and Kevin Winston Jr all potential impact players from day one.
Offensive Line
Marcus Mbow, Jonah Savaiinaea, and Jared Wilson are some potential interior linemen to keep your eye on. Ozzy Trapilo (who the Panthers have shown a ton of interest in), Aireontae Ersery, and Anthony Belton are players who could stick at tackle in the NFL. Since neither starting OT for the Panthers is under contract after this season, definitely look out for those names.
Offensive Skill Positions
Despite taking McMillan in the first round, the Panthers could look to bring an influx of skill position talent on day two. Luther Burden III, Mason Taylor, and Jaylin Noel could be guys the Panthers might look to add in the second round. Third round targets could include guys like Elic Ayomanor, Tre Harris, and Damien Martinez.
Which players do you hope the Panthers take on day two of the Draft? Sound off on the comments!
