It appears that the Las Vegas Raiders want to make Klint Kubiak their next head coach. On Jan. 31, reports emerged that the Seattle Seahawks‘ offensive coordinator wrapped up his second interview with the Silver and Black as he now turns his attention to the Super Bowl.
Moreover, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Jan. 31, citing sources, that the interview with Kubiak “went well.” With that interview behind them and the Seahawks coordinator likely the favorite, Raiders legend Reggie Kinlaw shared his thoughts on Kubiak potentially being the team’s next head coach.
“We’re going to talk about the new era,” Kinlaw told Vegas Sports Today in a video posted on Jan. 31. “This is new football. I mean, fundamentals have changed, have not changed, but the style of football has changed. So I’m looking at all these other teams that got great quarterbacks. I mean, great quarterbacks or young quarterbacks coming up. So you need a young head coach.
“Kubiak will be ideal for the Raiders. And plus, if we draft [Fernando] Mendoza, you got somebody that can coach this kid, break him in playing a new style of football, which is this all about passing, dude. I mean, you know, we either get a sit‑in‑the‑pocket quarterback or somebody that can move around.”
Kirk Morrison Talks Raiders Potentially Hiring Klint Kubiak
Kinlaw isn’t the only former Raider commenting on the potential arrival of Kubiak as the team’s next head coach. Kirk Morrison shared his take on the prospect of Kubiak leading the Silver and Black in this new era in which the team could have a new franchise QB in Fernando Mendoza.
“I think he checks a lot of the boxes,” Morrison said on the Jan. 28 edition of “Upon Further Review.” “You saw his offense not only just on the NFC conference championship game, but also throughout the whole entire season.
“I think even bigger is that you saw the offense uh with Sam Darnold who’s been a quarterback that’s bounced around the league and you know had success last year in Minnesota and really found a home you know in Seattle.”
What Makes Klint Kubiak an Interesting Candidate?
In Year 1 with Sam Darnold as the Seahawks’ QB, Kubiak helped the signal-caller post a passer rating of 99.1 with 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions in 17 games for Seattle this past regular season, per Stat Muse.
Moreover, Morrison revealed that the way Kubiak has been able to turn this Seahawks offense into a well-oiled machine, especially in the playoffs, have teams like the Raiders salivating at what he could do for them.
“I think what also intrigues me about Klint Kubiak is that it seems that he’s the kind of coach that has a system and a scheme that gets guys open, that gets guys to be at their best, and understanding that whatever the defense presents, you can have options. You can have things at your disposal.
“We’re going off one of the best job interviews in terms of what’s happened in these games so far in the playoffs, and his offense has done pretty darn good, led them to a Super Bowl. So now you’re kind of envisioning what that would look like for your football team if you’re the Raiders. And that’s kind of where the excitement has kind of come from.”
