Red Sox Get Bad Alex Bregman Update From Diamondbacks Insider

December 26, 2025 by Heavy

The Boston Red Sox made their first big move of the offseason when they acquired Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the second deal made between the two clubs as Boston acquired Sonny Gray earlier this offseason.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow still has a lot of work to do. One player he would love to bring back is Alex Bregman. He remains a free agent after opting out of his contract, and there is no shortage of teams looking to sign him. One team that has interest and has joined the sweepstakes is the Arizona Diamondbacks. On Friday, Arizona Sports 98.7’s Dan Bickley updated the Bregman sweepstakes on the Bickley & Marotta show, and it wasn’t promising news.

Red Sox Get Bad News on Alex Bregman Sweepstakes

Bickley said that it’s only a matter of time before Bregman signs with the Diamondbacks. He also explained why he would land in Arizona.

“I think it’s a matter of time before they get Alex Bregman, I think that’s a done deal to be honest with you,” Bickley said. “He’s going to be on this baseball team. It’s can they trade Ketel Marte beforehand? There’s a weird game of chicken going on. So I think Alex Bregman is going to be here regardless.”

Trading Marte is something that Arizona is looking to do. The Red Sox have been linked to him, but nothing has come close to getting done. Bickley believes that Arizona would like to part ways with Marte.

“I have been the one… that has said that the Diamondbacks clearly want to cut ties with him,” Bickley said. “Clearly, they’ve had enough of this, and especially with the 10 and 5 provisions, because if Ketel starts acting up again, what are you going to do then if you can’t trade him? I get what they’re doing. I’m not saying I agree with it, but I get it.”

John Gambadoro of the Burns & Gambo show mentioned that signing Bregman is something that Arizona wants to get done, but it’s not a guarantee that it will.

“Nothing has changed. What I did say is the Diamondbacks do not want this to drag on much longer,” said Gambadoro. “Either they’re going to trade Ketel Marte or shut it down. If they can’t get a good enough offer, they’re not going to drag this into Spring Training. They have to move on.”

Red Sox Need to Re-Sign Alex Bregman

To say that the offseason has been quiet for Boston and Breslow would be an understatement. Looking around at the rest of the American League East and nearly everyone has gotten better. The Baltimore Orioles landed Pete Alonso in free agency over the Red Sox, and the Toronto Blue Jays have gotten even better than they were in 2025.

Andrew Simon of MLB.com listed some other potential infielders Breslow could bring on board in Boston. Bo Bichette is available in free agency, while Simon mentioned Marte and Brandon Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals as potential fits.

Those are all good options, and Bichette is a younger player, but would likely cost more than Bregman. Breslow knows that Boston would be getting with Bregman, and he was a good fit once already. It feels like Breslow is waiting him out along with everyone else.
