The Detroit Red Wings are the team that is reportedly after Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers.
Myers is expected to be traded ahead of the March 6 trade deadline, but he has a no-movement clause, so he controls his destination. Although the Red Wings are battling for a playoff spot, Myers may not want to go there, as other playoff-bound teams could be interested in him, according to TSN NHL Chris Johnston.
“At this point in time, that’s not necessarily a place that Myers is looking to go. He’s inclined to wait to see if perhaps some other teams step up,” Johnston said on Insider Trading on Feb. 26.
With Myers not wanting to go to the Red Wings, Detroit may have to pivot to another defenseman.
Myers would have been a good fit for the Red Wings as he’s a big-body defenseman who can add some offense, but also plays well. He’s a good second-pairing defenseman and would be part of Detroit’s roster for two playoff runs.
However, for the time being, Myers isn’t too interested in accepting a trade to the Red Wings as he waits for other teams to show interest in him.
Myers is in the second year of his three-year, $9 million deal.
Canucks Holding Out Myers as Trade Looms
The NHL trade deadline is a week away, and the Canucks are expected to be one of the major sellers.
Myers is one of the top defensemen available, and Vancouver is holding him out of the lineup as the team awaits a trade.
“I found out last night it may happen and then was told after the morning skate that we’d have to take him out,” Canucks coach Adam Foote said. “This is the time of year where this kind of thing comes up and you’re kind of ready for it. It’s just the way it is. It comes with the (NHL) Trade Deadline. We’re all aware of what could happen, so it’s our job to make adjustments.”
Canucks players, meanwhile, agree that a Myers trade is inevitable.
“We know what’s going to happen; it’s the position we’re in. They’re going to move guys and get what they can. So, yeah, it (stinks) but it’s part of the business,” Boeser said.
Myers has recorded 1 goal and 7 assists for 8 points in 57 games this season.
Red Wings Looking to Add a Defenseman
Detroit is looking to snap its playoff drought, which should result in the team being aggressive ahead of the trade deadline.
NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed the team is looking to add a top-four defenseman.
“The Detroit Red Wings are among the teams scouring the trade market for help on the blueline. And are hoping to acquire a top-four defenseman, preferably with a right shot by the trade deadline,” Pagnotta wrote. “Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman has been exploring his options, according to multiple league sources. Though it is unclear if he has made traction towards a deal.
“The Red Wings reportedly expressed interest in Rasmus Andersson earlier in the season before the Calgary Flames traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights. Detroit has also been linked to Philadelphia Flyers rearguard Rasmus Ristolainen. Detroit has over $45 million in salary cap space. And is not restricted by the cap to add to its roster before deadline day.”
The Red Wings are 34-19-6 and are in second place in the Atlantic Division.
