Report: ‘Lurking’ Panthers remain factor for free agent Derek Carr

March 5, 2023 by Panthers Wire

The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine only could have strengthened the Carolina Panthers’ hopes of drafting and developing a franchise quarterback. But even after a sensational Saturday for three of the “big four” prospects, there are other options.

And one of those, according to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, is still free agent Derek Carr. Fowler, in his most recent legwork with colleague Dan Graziano, notes that the Panthers aren’t out on the four-time Pro Bowler.

He writes:

The New York Jets and Carolina Panthers remain interested in Carr, too, but it’s more complicated with them due to the Jets’ interest in Rodgers and the Panthers’ chance to solve their quarterback position once and for all in the draft (No. 9 overall). Carolina his lurking here, with a follow-up call with Carr early this week. The Panthers are a factor. And at least two other teams have reached out on Carr in recent weeks.

That follow-up call is expected to come on Monday. This’ll be the second talk between the Panthers and Carr, who—as stated by head coach Frank Reich at the combine on Wednesday—had a “very good” meeting earlier in the week.
