The Carolina Hurricanes Lead the Metro but Aren’t Without Injury Troubles

December 22, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

With the holidays, we would like to bring good news, but maybe it is a chance to for those players, although they would rather be playing, to spend some extra time with family. In any sense, the Carolina Hurricanes have some injury news to pass along today. Both have an injury, Jaccob Slavin and Seth Jarvis will be reportedly out week-to-week. This season has not been an easy one in Raleigh, North Carolina, so let’s figure out where the Canes stand following these injury announcements.

Seth Jarvis and Jaccob Slavin Each Have an Injury and Will Be Out for Sometime

The Hurricanes have been among the top dogs in the Metropolitan Division for some time. This season has been no different, as they currently hold a four-point lead on the Washington Capitals for top spot in the division. However, for the collective Carolina group, 2025-26 has not been without its adversity. Now, with these injury updates to a couple of their star players, their collective resolve will be tested.

Jarvis was injured Friday evening in overtime against the Florida Panthers. He was flying to the net, and ended up crashing hard into the post. You could tell immediately he was in obvious discomfort.

Can Jarvis Make Team Canada?

He has been having a decent season. In 34 games, he has 19 goals and added ten assists. He’s a big part of the Hurricanes being able to attack in waves. Moreover, the Hurricanes have nine players total, who have netted six or more tucks this campaign. Jarvis, who was a member of Team Canada at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, has been seeing lots of competition for those remaining few roster spots up for grabs for the Olympic roster. Our final roster projection for the team that we released today, did not have Jarvis on it.

Now, with the timing of the injury, it is going to be tough for Jarvis to convince the Team Canada brass he will be at the ultra-competitive level needed for international play. Needless to say, we don’t see him making the final roster, regardless of the injury. However, it is still up for debate. He was there, plays with incredible pace and has great skill. Plus the fact he played for Canada, he definitely wouldn’t be considered a wrong selection. It really is more about the other guys, Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini come to mind, who have played their way onto the team.

Back to the Carolina picture for a minute, and Jackson Blake and Jordan Staal will see an increase in opportunity in Jarvis’ absence. Both had been power play replacements in practice, and will look to help fill the void left by Jarvis in the Canes forward group.

Moving On to Slavin

If we look at the situation for Jaccob Slavin, he has only managed five games for Carolina this year. The hope is with this news, that he will return, but it might be a few weeks away. Carolina has managed fine without him, fortunately. Guys like Alexander Nikishin and Ke’Andre Miller have played well.

Now of course, Slavin’s status has Olympic implications, too. Slavin is considered one of the better defensive, defencemen in the game. He has the skating, combined with the strength and puck skills, to combat any offensive superstar. Hopefully with this latest timeline, he can get back to NHL action, to get up to game speed, before shipping off to Milan.
