After the midweek away leg matches in the Concacaf Champions Cup, both the New England Revolution and FC Cincinnati will meet at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. For the Revolution, they will be searching for their first result of the MLS regular season. They host the defending Supporters’ Shield winners who have yet to lose three matches into the young season. Here is a preview of the matinee match between New England vs Cincinnati on March 17.

New England Current Run of Form

The Revolution has had a disastrous start to the MLS season. After three matches the Revs have yet to yield a result with a 0/3/0 record. A first-half Giacomo Vrioni red card left the team vulnerable in a 3-1 loss to DC United to start the year. The home opener in Foxboro was spoiled by Toronto FC’s Lorenzo Insigne’s goal in a 1-0 loss. And poor defending led to a 4-1 loss in Atlanta last week. However, the Revolution has advanced to the quarterfinal of the Champions Cup after beating both Panamanian club Independiente and Costa Rican club Alajuelense over two legs each.

Cincinnati Current Run of Form

FC Cincinnati has had a successful start to the defense of their 2023 Supporters’ Shield. Cincinnati has yet to lose with a 1/2/0 record so far in 2024. They started their season with a scoreless draw against Toronto FC at home. They went on the road the next week when they won 2-1 in Chicago thanks to goals from Aaron Boupendza and Miles Robinson. Cincinnati was again held scoreless at home in a 0-0 draw against DC United. After advancing past Jamaican club FC Cavalier in the Champions Cup, Cincinnati was eliminated by Monterrey on Thursday in Mexico.

New England vs Cincinnati Recent Head to Head

New England faced Cincinnati twice in 2023. Both matches ended in a draw. Cincinnati’s last trip to Gillette on April 29 ended 1-1 with goals from Yerson Mosquera and Emmanuel Boateng. When the Revolution travelled to Cincinnati on July 1 it was another stalemate. The star was Dominique Badji, who despite letting in an early own goal gave his team two in a 2-2 draw.

New England vs Cincinnati Prediction

The Revolution and Cincinnati appear to have opposite starts to their seasons which might come down to priorities. While the Revolution have yet to win in MLS they are going to face Club America in April after advancing to the Quarterfinal of the Champions Cup. FC Cincinnati has had no losses in the regular season but has struggled during the midweek and was eliminated from the Champions Cup in their last match. New England’s weakness in defense and composure could be a major hole against a team with Cincinnati’s quality. Their best hope is that the away team is exhausted after two tough legs against Mexican giants Monterrey. Expect a dominant win by Cincinnati whose only win so far has come on the road.
